How The Cat Kind works

There is no clever part. That is rather the point.

1. You buy jewellery

Beaded and plated pieces from established workshops, at the price point this category runs at. It has to be worth owning on its own — if it is not, you have bought a donation with a bracelet stapled to it and you would have done better donating.

2. A fixed amount is set aside

$2 per eligible item, $6 on a three-item set. Not "a portion of proceeds", not "a percentage of profits after costs". A percentage of profit moves whenever our costs move, which makes it impossible to check. A fixed amount can be multiplied by anybody.

3. We buy food and put it down ourselves

This is the part that differs from most of the category. We do not send the money to a partner charity. We buy the food and run the session, which means the receipt is ours, the photographs are ours, and a bad month has nobody to hide behind. The longer argument is here.

4. It gets published — including the zeroes

Date, amount, what it bought. Our impact page currently reads zero across the board, because the first session has not run. It will keep reading zero until that changes, and we are not going to dress that up.

What we deliberately do not do

  • No cumulative counter. "5,000,000 meals" is the category standard and almost nobody audits it.
  • No customer or review counts we have not earned.
  • No charity framing. We are a business. Your purchase is not tax-deductible. Why that matters.
